Apostille for Mauritius

Mauritius has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 12 March 1968; it has applied with India from 14 July 2005, the date the Convention entered into force for India.

Close ties, many purposes

Family, cultural and business links between Mauritius and India run deep. Indian professionals work there on occupation permits, couples travel there to marry, and Indian entrepreneurs and investors use Mauritian companies for regional and international business, so corporate documents are a frequent request alongside personal ones.

How the route works

A party since 1968, Mauritius has accepted Apostilles on Indian documents since the Convention took effect for India on 14 July 2005. Once a document has been notarised or authenticated at state or Chamber of Commerce level, it receives an MEA Apostille. No High Commission stage follows.

Practical notes for Mauritius

Company and KYC documents

Management companies that administer Mauritian companies typically ask for due-diligence documents on Indian shareholders and directors, along with certified corporate records: a certificate of incorporation, memorandum of association, articles of association and board resolutions. Whether each must be apostilled or simply certified depends on the management company and the purpose, and many ask for recently certified copies.

Occupation permits

Permit applications, usually handled through the Economic Development Board, commonly include a degree certificate and proof of experience. Ask your employer whether apostilled copies are needed.

Civil marriages

Couples who are not resident in Mauritius can usually marry there under civil law. The Civil Status Office typically asks for each partner's birth certificate and proof of single status, such as a single status certificate, plus a divorce certificate where a previous marriage has ended.

Property and inheritance

Mauritian notaries handle property transfers and successions, and may ask for an apostilled power of attorney or death certificate from India.

Frequently asked questions

Our Mauritius management company wants apostilled KYC documents. What does that involve?

Usually notarised copies of passports, address proofs and company records, which are then authenticated and apostilled. Ask the management company exactly which documents it needs, how recent they must be and whether it wants an Apostille or simple certification for each.

We are getting married in Mauritius. Which Indian documents do we need?

Typically each partner's birth certificate and proof of single status, plus a divorce certificate or death certificate if a previous marriage has ended. The Civil Status Office or your wedding planner will confirm whether these must be apostilled and how recent they should be.

Is a French translation needed for Mauritius?

Not usually for English-language documents, as English is widely used in administration and the courts. A notary or court may occasionally prefer French, so check with them first.
