Apostille for Sweden

Sweden has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 1 May 1999, and the Convention has applied between India and Sweden since it entered into force for India on 14 July 2005.

Who needs Indian documents in Sweden

Sweden attracts Indian software engineers, researchers and master's students, and many later bring a spouse or children over. The request for legalised documents often comes after arrival rather than before: when you register a family event with the Swedish authorities, marry in Sweden or set up a business there.

Apostille, not embassy legalisation

The Apostille Convention applies between India and Sweden, so your documents do not need legalising by the Swedish Embassy. After notarisation or state-level authentication, where the document needs it, they receive an MEA Apostille, which the Swedish authority can verify online with the MEA.

When Swedish authorities ask for an Apostille

  • Registering a marriage or a child. The Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) keeps the population register. To record a marriage that took place in India, or a child born there, it may ask for the original marriage certificate or birth certificate, sometimes with an Apostille.
  • Marrying in Sweden. Before a wedding, the Tax Agency checks that there is no impediment to the marriage. Indian citizens are usually asked for proof of marital status: depending on what is accepted, an apostilled single status certificate from India or a document arranged through the Indian mission in Sweden.
  • Permits and study. Work and residence permit applications are largely made online with scans, and universities set their own rules, so an Apostille is not always needed at this stage. Regulated professions such as healthcare may ask for more.
  • Business. An Indian company opening a Swedish branch or subsidiary may need its certificate of incorporation and a board resolution apostilled for the Swedish Companies Registration Office.

Language

Swedish authorities often accept English documents as they are; certificates in an Indian language usually need a translation.

Route for Indian documents going to Sweden

  1. 1

Check what the Swedish authority wants

Ask the Tax Agency, Migration Agency, university or registry whether it needs an Apostille, a translation or a recently issued document.

  2. 2

    Review and notarisation

We review your scans first. Copies, affidavits and company documents are notarised where the authority requires it.

  3. 3

    State or Chamber authentication

Marriage, birth and single status certificates go to the Home Department or GAD of the issuing state; company documents go to a Chamber of Commerce.

  4. 4

    MEA Apostille

Your documents are submitted to the MEA, whose Apostille carries a unique number that Swedish authorities can check online.

  5. 5

    Translation and return

If the authority wants a translation, we arrange it at the stage it expects, then return your documents by courier.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Swedish Embassy to legalise my Indian documents?

No. Because the Convention has been in force between the two countries since 14 July 2005, an MEA Apostille replaces embassy legalisation. The Swedish authority may still set its own rules on translation or on how recent a document must be.

Which Indian documents do I need to marry in Sweden?

The Swedish Tax Agency checks for impediments to marriage and usually asks foreign citizens for proof of marital status. Ask it whether an apostilled single status certificate from India is acceptable, or whether it prefers a document arranged through the Indian mission in Sweden.

Will the Tax Agency accept my Indian marriage certificate if it is in English?

Swedish authorities often accept English documents, although each case is assessed individually. If your certificate is in Hindi or a regional language, plan for a translation through Document Translation.
