Apostille for Switzerland
Switzerland has applied the Apostille Convention since 11 March 1973 and has recognised Indian Apostilles since India became a party with effect from 14 July 2005.
Switzerland's pharmaceutical, finance, engineering and technology sectors attract Indian professionals, and Swiss universities draw Indian students and researchers. Families follow, couples marry, and Indian companies open Swiss entities. With the Apostille Convention in force between the two countries, an MEA Apostille is all the legalisation an Indian public document needs for Switzerland, although cantonal offices can still set other requirements.
Cantons set the practical rules
Switzerland is a federal country, and much of the paperwork is handled by cantonal and communal offices: migration offices for permits, civil registry offices for births and marriages, and commercial registers for companies. Requirements can differ from canton to canton, including the language, how recent a certificate must be and whether a translation is needed. Check with the office handling your case.
Civil status documents
Civil registry offices dealing with a marriage, a birth or a change of status commonly ask for a birth certificate, marriage certificate or divorce decree. They may want recently issued documents and can request additional checks on foreign civil status records, so allow for this when planning. Personal documents are authenticated by the Home Department or GAD of the issuing state before the MEA Apostille.
Work, study and recognition
Employers and permit authorities may ask for a degree certificate or an experience certificate, and recognition of a professional qualification can involve apostilled academic records. Degrees normally pass through university verification and the State Education Department first.
Company documents
For a Swiss subsidiary, branch or bank relationship, expect requests for a certificate of incorporation or board resolution, usually attested by a Chamber of Commerce before the MEA, and sometimes a power of attorney for a local representative.
Translations and next steps
Depending on the canton, a translation into German, French or Italian may be needed, and our document translation service can help. Once you know what the cantonal office expects, use the Service Finder to check each document or request a quote.

Frequently asked questions
Which language do Swiss offices need?
It depends on the canton: German in Zurich or Basel, French in Geneva or Vaud, and Italian in Ticino, for example. Some offices accept English documents, so ask the office handling your case before arranging a translation.
Why has a Swiss civil registry office asked for more checks on my Indian certificate?
Swiss civil registry offices can request additional checks on foreign civil status documents before recording them. An MEA Apostille confirms the signature and seal on the document but does not replace checks the office decides to make, so follow its instructions.
Does a Swiss work permit application need apostilled documents?
Requirements are set by the canton and the details of your application. Some offices ask for apostilled degrees or civil status documents, while others accept copies, so check the list you receive before arranging an Apostille.
