Apostille for France

France is one of the original parties to the Apostille Convention, in force there since 1965, and the Convention has applied between France and India since 14 July 2005.

France draws Indian students to its universities and business schools, professionals on Talent Passport and intra-company permits, and couples who marry or register a PACS there. Indian companies opening a French subsidiary also need their papers recognised. Because the Apostille Convention applies between India and France, an MEA Apostille replaces legalisation by the French Embassy.

Translation shapes the French process

In France the translation often matters as much as the Apostille. Prefectures, town halls (mairies) and courts commonly ask for a French translation by a traducteur assermenté, a translator sworn before a French court of appeal. Two points to settle early:

  • The Apostille is translated too. A sworn translation usually covers the whole document, including the Apostille certificate, so the Apostille generally comes first.
  • Where the translation is made. Some offices accept translations prepared in India; others insist on a translator recognised in France. Ask before you commission one. Our document translation service can help where an Indian translation is accepted.

Marriage, PACS and family matters

Mairies and notaries handling a marriage or PACS often ask for a recently issued birth certificate and proof of civil status, such as a single status certificate. Some want certificates issued within the last few months, so check dates before ordering copies. Family reunification typically requires a marriage certificate.

Study and business

Students may need a degree certificate or transcript for enrolment or for recognition of their qualifications. Company papers such as a certificate of incorporation or board resolution are attested by a Chamber of Commerce before the MEA Apostille.

The Service Finder shows the route for each document, and you can request a quote when you are ready.

Route for Indian documents going to France

  1. 1

    Check the French requirements

Ask the prefecture, mairie, university or notary whether it needs an Apostille, how recent the certificate must be and who may translate it.

  2. 2

    Order recent copies and verify

Obtain freshly issued certificates where dates matter, and arrange university verification or notarisation as required.

  3. 3

    State or Chamber authentication

Birth and civil status certificates go to the Home Department or GAD of the issuing state; papers for a French subsidiary go to a Chamber of Commerce.

  4. 4

    MEA Apostille

The MEA affixes its Apostille, which a sworn French translation will usually cover along with the document.

  5. 5

    French translation

The document and its Apostille are translated into French, in India if the office accepts it, or by a sworn translator in France.

  6. 6

    Submit in France

Hand the apostilled original and the translation to the French authority, keeping copies of both.

Frequently asked questions

Should the French translation be done before or after the Apostille?

Usually after. French authorities generally expect the translation to cover the whole document, including the Apostille certificate. Confirm with the office receiving your documents, as practice can vary.

Can a translation made in India be used in France?

Some French offices accept a professional translation prepared in India, but many ask for a translator sworn before a French court of appeal. Ask the prefecture, mairie or court before commissioning a translation.

How recent must my birth certificate be for a marriage in France?

Mairies often ask for a birth certificate issued within the last few months. The exact period is set by the mairie, so check it before ordering a fresh copy and starting the Apostille.
