Transcript Apostille & Attestation

Apostille and attestation for university transcripts, including those issued in sealed envelopes, for graduate admissions, credential evaluation and licensing.

What a transcript is

A transcript is a consolidated record of every subject and mark or grade across your whole programme, often with credits and the grading scale. Unlike a marksheet, it is not issued automatically: you apply to the university's examination or registrar's section, which prepares it on letterhead with the signature and seal of the Registrar or Controller of Examinations.

Photocopies of marksheets attested by your college principal are generally not treated as a transcript by institutions abroad, even when bound together.

The sealed-envelope problem

Many universities abroad and credential evaluators, including those running WES-style assessments, want transcripts in an envelope sealed and signed across the flap by the university, or sent directly by it. An Apostille or attestation stamp, however, has to go on the transcript itself, which means opening the envelope.

The usual answer is to order more than one set:

  1. An authentication set, which goes through university verification, the State Education (HRD) Department and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
  2. A sealed set, kept unopened or sent directly by the university, if the receiving body wants one.

Ask the receiving institution which format it expects before you order. Some want a sealed transcript and no Apostille at all; others want an authenticated transcript and no envelope.

Route by destination

countries where the Apostille Convention applies with India such as the USA, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand accept an MEA Apostille. Countries outside the Convention with India, such as the UAE or Kuwait, need MEA attestation followed by embassy attestation.

Practical points

  • Multi-page transcripts can be queried if pages are loose or unnumbered, so ask the university to number, sign and seal each page.
  • If your results are not on a credit system, some evaluators ask for the university's explanation of its grading scale.
  • Transcripts for Spain, Italy or other non-English-speaking destinations may also need document translation.
  • A transcript does not replace your degree certificate; many admissions and licensing bodies want both.

Frequently asked questions

Can a transcript in a sealed envelope be apostilled?

Not without opening it, because the stamp has to be placed on the transcript itself. If the receiving body also wants a sealed copy, order a separate set from the university and keep it unopened.

Is a transcript the same as a consolidated marksheet?

Not quite. A consolidated marksheet is a statement of results, while a transcript is prepared on request and often includes credits, the grading scale and the Registrar's seal. Some institutions abroad accept either, so check their wording.

Do I need a transcript apostille for a WES-style evaluation?

Often not. Many evaluators want documents sent directly by the university and verify them themselves. Follow the evaluator's instructions, and authenticate the transcript where an admitting university, employer or regulator asks for it.

My university takes weeks to issue transcripts. What can I do?

Apply early, and order every set you need, both for authentication and sealed, in a single request. University and state verification usually set the overall pace, and those timelines vary.
