Marksheet Apostille & Attestation

Apostille and attestation for Class 10, Class 12 and university marksheets, semester-wise or consolidated, for admissions, jobs and equivalence abroad.

Two kinds of marksheet

Marksheets come from two kinds of issuer, and each follows its own route:

  • School board marksheets for Class 10 and Class 12, issued by CBSE, CISCE or a state board.
  • University marksheets, also called grade cards or statements of marks, issued semester-wise or as a single consolidated marksheet by a university or autonomous college.

How each is authenticated

Board marksheets are usually verified with the board and then authenticated by the state's school education department. University marksheets go through the university and the state's higher education department. Central boards such as CBSE and CISCE do not sit under any one state, so their route can differ, and e-Sanad may be an option where the board has been onboarded.

After state-level authentication, the marksheet goes to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for an MEA Apostille, or for MEA attestation followed by embassy attestation, depending on the destination.

Consolidated or semester-wise?

This question often decides the size of the job. Each marksheet is a separate document with its own stamp, so eight semester marksheets mean eight authentications. A consolidated marksheet can reduce this, provided the receiving authority accepts it.

Some universities abroad want every semester, including supplementary or re-examination results; others are content with the consolidated marksheet plus your degree certificate. Ask before you start.

Where marksheets are needed

  • Undergraduate admission abroad usually starts with Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets.
  • Postgraduate admissions and credential evaluations ask for university results, often alongside a transcript.
  • Some employment visas and education equivalency processes ask for school marksheets as proof of education level.
  • Students moving to a school abroad may need their latest board marksheet with a school leaving certificate.

Before you send them

Check that your name, date of birth and roll number are consistent across all marksheets and your passport. Digital marksheets, such as those in DigiLocker, are useful for checks within India, but whether they can be legalised for use abroad depends on the authority, and many processes still start from the printed original.

Marksheets in a regional language, or going to a country that requires its own language, may also need document translation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to apostille every semester marksheet?

Not necessarily. Each marksheet is authenticated separately, so ask the receiving university or employer whether a consolidated marksheet is acceptable. If they want every semester, include supplementary or re-examination results too.

My Class 12 marksheet is from CBSE. Is the route the same as for a state board?

Not always. Central-board documents can follow a different verification route from state-board documents, and e-Sanad may be an option. Share a copy with us and we will confirm the current route before you send the original.

Can my Class 10 marksheet serve as proof of date of birth abroad?

Indian authorities often accept Class 10 records as proof of date of birth, but authorities abroad usually expect a birth certificate. Check with the receiving authority before relying on a marksheet for this.

My marksheet is laminated. Can it still be authenticated?

Laminated or badly damaged marksheets may be refused, because stamps cannot be placed on them or the document cannot be properly examined. A duplicate marksheet from the board or university is often the practical solution.
