Thailand Embassy Attestation

Thailand has acceded to the Apostille Convention, which enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027; until then Indian documents need embassy legalisation, and from that date the Apostille is expected to apply, subject to confirmation at the time.

Thailand attracts Indian professionals, teachers, entrepreneurs and companies, and the documents they need reflect that: degrees for work permits and teaching licences, corporate papers for registering a Thai company or a branch, and civil documents for marriages and family visas.

Embassy legalisation now, an Apostille expected from 28 February 2027

Thailand has acceded to the Apostille Convention, and it enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Until then, Indian documents need state or Chamber authentication, MEA attestation and legalisation by the Royal Thai Embassy or a Thai consulate in India. From 28 February 2027 an MEA Apostille is expected to replace the embassy stage, but confirm the position with the Thai authority at the time.

If your timing is close to the date

Think about when the document will be presented in Thailand, not when you start. If it will be used after the change, ask the Thai authority whether it will accept an Apostille, and whether it will still accept a document legalised earlier. Until the date passes, we plan on the legalisation route.

Translation into Thai

Thai offices generally need a Thai translation, often prepared in Thailand and, for some purposes, certified by Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ask which translation is accepted before ordering a translation in India.

We handle the Indian stages of embassy attestation now, and MEA Apostille once it applies. To check which route fits your dates, use the Service Finder or request a quote.

Route for Indian documents going to Thailand

  1. 1

Check when the document will be used

If it will be presented in Thailand on or after 28 February 2027, ask the Thai authority whether it will accept an Apostille instead of legalisation.

  2. 2

    State or Chamber authentication

Degrees for work permits or teaching licences go to the State Education Department, a single status or divorce certificate to the Home Department or GAD, and company papers to a Chamber of Commerce.

  3. 3

    MEA attestation

Until the Convention applies to Thailand, the MEA attests the document instead of apostilling it.

  4. 4

    Thai Embassy or consulate legalisation

The Royal Thai Embassy or a Thai consulate in India legalises the document. From 28 February 2027 this stage is expected to give way to an MEA Apostille.

  5. 5

    Thai translation

A Thai translation is often prepared in Thailand and, for some purposes, certified by Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an Apostille for Thailand now?

Not yet. The Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027, and until then Indian documents need MEA attestation and legalisation by the Royal Thai Embassy or a Thai consulate in India.

My documents will be used in Thailand in March 2027. Which route should I follow?

Ask the Thai authority whether it will accept an Apostille after 28 February 2027 or still expects legalisation. We confirm the position with you at the time and plan the route accordingly.

Do my documents need translating into Thai?

Often, yes. Thai translations are commonly prepared in Thailand, and some purposes require certification by Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Check with the receiving authority before ordering one in India.
