Qatar Embassy Attestation

Qatar is not a party to the Apostille Convention (HCCH status table, last updated 30 June 2026), so Indian documents are attested by the MEA, legalised by the Embassy of Qatar in India and then attested by MOFA Qatar.

Indian documents bound for Qatar typically support a work residence permit, a professional registration, a family residence application or a commercial venture. Many Qatari sponsors ask for attested documents early in the visa process, so it helps to start before you have a travel date and to get the sponsor's exact list.

The Qatar route

Qatar is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so an MEA Apostille will not be accepted. Documents are first authenticated in India — by the State Education (HRD) Department for academic records, the Home Department or GAD for personal documents, or a Chamber of Commerce for company papers — then attested by the MEA and legalised by the Embassy of Qatar in India. The final step, attestation by Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), happens in Qatar. Neighbouring Bahrain works differently: the Apostille Convention has been in force between Bahrain and India since 31 December 2013.

Documents by purpose

Purpose Documents often requested
Work residence permit Degree certificate, sometimes marksheets
Professional registration Degree, transcripts and experience certificates
Family residence Marriage certificate and children's birth certificates
Company or agency set-up Certificate of incorporation, memorandum of association, power of attorney

Points specific to Qatar

  • Engineers, healthcare workers and teachers usually deal with a separate professional or licensing body, which may verify qualifications independently of attestation.
  • Attestation is separate from the visa centre appointment for biometrics and medicals that a Qatar work visa can involve.
  • Arabic translations are often arranged through a translation office in Qatar; ask before you order a translation in India.

Frequently asked questions

Bahrain accepts Indian Apostilles. Why does Qatar not?

The Apostille Convention has been in force between Bahrain and India since 31 December 2013, but Qatar is not a party to it. Documents for Qatar are therefore attested by the MEA, legalised by the Embassy of Qatar in India and attested by MOFA Qatar after arrival.

Do I need my marriage certificate attested for a Qatar family residence visa?

Typically, yes, along with your children's birth certificates. Some sponsors are also asked for an attested degree, so check the current list with the receiving authority before you start.

Is attestation the same as my visa centre appointment?

No. Attestation authenticates your documents, while a visa centre appointment, where one applies, covers steps such as biometrics and medical checks. They are separate processes and one does not replace the other.
