Bonafide Certificate Apostille & Attestation
Apostille and attestation for bonafide (student status) certificates from Indian schools, colleges and universities, for exchange programmes, visas and school moves.
What a bonafide certificate confirms
A bonafide certificate is a short letter from your school, college or university confirming that you are a bona fide student currently enrolled there. It usually names your course, year or class and the academic session. Unlike a degree or marksheet, it describes your status on the date it was issued, which is why authorities abroad look closely at that date.
When it is needed abroad
- Exchange semesters and short programmes, where the host university or immigration office wants proof that you remain enrolled in India.
- Family relocation, where a child's current enrolment forms part of a visa or residence application, or the new school asks for it.
- Scholarships, internships and research visits that require proof of student status.
How it is authenticated
A bonafide certificate is issued by the institution itself rather than through a board or university examination system, so its route varies more than for other academic documents. Commonly, a school's certificate is verified by the education officer, and a college's by its affiliating university, before the State Education Department authenticates it. In some states, letters like this are instead treated as non-government documents: notarised, then authenticated by the Home Department or GAD.
Either way, the next step is the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), for an MEA Apostille or for MEA attestation followed by embassy attestation.
Getting the wording right first time
Because it is a letter rather than a standard form, its contents matter. Before you request it, check that it:
- is on letterhead showing the institution's full address and contact details;
- gives your full name exactly as in your passport, ideally with your date of birth;
- states the course, year and academic session, plus the purpose if the receiving authority wants one stated;
- carries the name, designation and signature of the signing officer, with the institution's seal;
- is recently dated.
Many receiving authorities expect a certificate issued within the last few months, and authentication itself takes time. Request it shortly before you begin, and confirm with the receiving authority how recent it must be.
For destinations that work in another language, such as France or Spain, document translation may also be needed.

Frequently asked questions
How recent should a bonafide certificate be?
There is no single rule. Many receiving authorities expect a certificate issued within the last few months, so ask them first and request the certificate shortly before you start the authentication process.
Can my college's bonafide certificate go straight to the MEA?
Usually not. The MEA generally expects state-level authentication first, which for a college letter may involve verification by the university. The exact route depends on the state.
My certificate says it was issued "for bank loan purposes". Can I still use it abroad?
It is safer to request a fresh certificate that states the correct purpose, or none at all. Authorities abroad may question a letter issued for something else.
We are relocating with our child. Which school documents should we legalise?
Schools abroad typically ask for some combination of a bonafide certificate (while your child is still enrolled), the latest report card and, once your child has left, the school leaving certificate. The new school's checklist will tell you which apply.
